We are looking for your support and partnership with rewilding the land around the Northaven Trail. In addition to providing beautiful scenery for walks, runs, and rides along the trail, these wildflowers filter rain runoff while providing shelter and food for butterflies and other pollinators. Your support is what allows these beautification efforts to thrive.
The funds raised from last year's North Texas Giving Day allowed us to expand and enrich wildflower pollination areas. For eight straight years, the Friends of Northaven Trail has planted wildflower seeds along the entire trail. Last year, we sponsored a number of additional activities to support vibrant wildflowers. For instance, we organized two No Mow zone clean outs, removing unwanted vegetation and spreading seeds from the previous year’s wildflowers. We recently seeded bluebonnets near Preston Road and partnered with the Gardening Club of St. Marks on an exciting rewilding project: planting of over 2,000 native seedlings by Bachman Creek.
Donations from North Texas Giving Day 2021 also allowed us to install a new drinking fountain at Welch Road. With the help of a local girl scout troop, we were also able to install two picnic tables and new landscaping at this new respite.
This year, Friends of Northaven Trail funds will continue supporting our Rewilding Project and increase the number of pollinator zones along the trail. For instance, the Pensive Trailhead’s respite was recently planted by a local Girl Scout troop, and we will support this area by installing permanent irrigation at the site.
Kevin Sloan Studio, internationally recognized thought leader for rewilded projects, created a Master Plan for North Dallas's Northaven Trail that will be beautiful, nature-rich, educational, and an environmentally friendly inspiration for community conservation efforts and recreation. The Studio plans integrate stands of Blackland prairie grasses and wildflowers, with garden sections to specifically attract butterflies, pollinators, hummingbirds, and migrating songbirds, with accents and ornamental places for friends and neighbors to meet and enjoy the trail. The carefully curated landscape of native plants and ornaments will resemble flowing slices of the original North Texas Blackland prairie, punctuated by ornamental gardens.
