The article's author notes that trails add value to the neighborhoods they border and interviews several real estate agents who point to Katy Trail and Santa Fe Trail and the benefits both have brought to their respective neighborhoods. Dallas County Commissioners Court Acknowledges Support for Northaven Trail
Maurine Dickey, Dallas County Commissioner District I, presented a Resolution at the January 25 County Commissioners Court formally acknowledging Dallas County’s support for the Northaven Trail. The Resolution expressed the Northaven Trail's importance as an alternate transportation route connecting the eastern and western neighborhoods of North Dallas as well as a vital link in the City of Dallas Trail System of bike and hiking trails. It will directly link to the White Rock Creek Trail, the Cottonwood Trail and the future Veloway Trail as well as DART's Red and Green Line transit stations that serve North Dallas. Dallas County will begin a planning study to connect the Northaven Trail to the White Rock Creek Trail and has agreed to fund the Trail's connection. This is a complex interagency project because the connection must cross US 75 (North Central Expressway) , DART's Red Line, White Rock Creek and an Oncor easement. Dallas County is particularly well suited for such interagency coordination. Friends of Northaven Trail board members Lee Kleinman, Warren Parham, Gwen Holmes and Martha Parks attended and were introduced to the Commissioners’ Court. Also attending were Michael Hellmann and Jared White of the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department who are actively involved in the planning, design and construction of the City's off street trail system. Max Kalhammer, the City of Dallas Bicycle Coordinator also attended.
The County awarded $109,000 for the study and has allocated up to $2.5 million for the construction of this connection. This grant matches the City of Dallas' commitment of the same amount from 2006 bond funds.
The FoNHT would like to thank Commissioner Dickey and the Commissioners Court as well as Dallas County staff members (Mike Pappas, Jonathan Toffer and several others) for their help and support of the Northaven Trail.
Northaven Trail North Central Connection Study Announced
In a January 12 memorandum from Dallas Public Works Department to the Commissions Court, Alberta Blair, Director of Public Works, presents the Commissioners with a Dallas County funded plan to study and construct a trail connecting Northaven Trail to White Rock Creek Trail. In the memorandum, the Director describes Dallas County's plan to fund a study of potential routes, including creek and Central Expressway crossings, and also mentions that Dallas County has identified $2,500,000 in funding to construct the connecting trail.Contractors on the study include la terra studio, who are the designers of Northaven Trail.
Details of the study are included in the memorandum.

The meeting takes place Thursday, January 20 at Dallas City Hall in the Flag Room (6E-North) from 5 PM to 8 PM.

December Update on Trail Progress
Progress on the Northaven Trail continues. la terra studio has completed the bid documents for the Northaven Trail and on December 9 the Dallas Park and Recreation Board authorized the Park and Recreation Department to solicit bids for the construction of the trail. Construction bids will be submitted sometime in January and the contract should be awarded in February or March. The City and Oncor are close to completing their agreement for the use of the easement. Dallas County is in the process of selecting a consultant to study the connection between the Northaven Trail and the White Rock Creek Trail. This complex connection will include crossing Central Expressway, White Rock Creek and the DART Red Line and will involve multiple governmental agencies. The County has demonstrated experience in coordinating the efforts of similar projects and developing inter-local agreements.
